THE NYS 2021 – A WORLD CONFERENCE

The uncertainty of COVID 19 has prompted numerous changes for The 2021 National Youth Summit – A World Conference. In addition to expanding to a worldwide event in collaboration with the ticketing platform, Eventbrite, the 2021 Summit, originally scheduled to be held at Alabama State University in, out of an abundance of caution, we are exploring new and innovative ways to both engage student leaders and educators from around the world  and maintain the safety of participants and our faculty.

Similar to the 2020 summit that was converted to a virtual event, we will have online workshops and, safety permitting, a limited number of local students participating on the campus of Alabama State University. Feel free to explore our 2019 Agenda as well as some of the virtual workshops from the 2020 Virtual National Youth Summit.

Police, Traffic Stops, and Building Trust   -In light of the current resistance to police brutality and killings, retired US Marshall and former Chief of Police for Jackson MS,  Robert Moore, will present his 10 point program designed to diffuse conflicts between police and drivers.

HISTORY, HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE POWER OF ONE – TAKE A LIVING HISTORY JOURNEY WITH A DIRECT DESCENDANT OF TWO OF AMERICA’S MOST INFLUENTIAL HEROES.  KEN MORRIS, JR., THE GREAT-GREAT-GREAT-GRANDSON OF FREDERICK DOUGLASS AND THE GREAT-GREAT- GRANDSON OF BOOKER T. WASHINGTON WILL GIVE A PRESENTATION ABOUT THE HISTORY OF HIS FAMILY, THE PRESSURE HE FELT GROWING UP IN THE SHADOW OF HIS ESTEEMED ANCESTORS, AND HIS WORK TODAY FIGHTING AGAINST MODERN SLAVERY AND RACIAL OPPRESSION AS CO-FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT OF FREDERICK DOUGLASS FAMILY INITIATIVES.

Rethinking Retirement – Creating Wealth for Such a Time as This   -As the CEO of Compas Retirement Solutions, Marvin Mitchell has dedicated his career to helping those in or near retirement protect their retirement portfolio. He believes in safety first, keeping it simple while earning a reasonable rate of return. A St. Louis native, Mitchell is passionate about giving back to his local community. He and his team at Compass Retirement Solutions spend extra hours volunteering, donating college scholarship money for lower-income students and contributing to breast cancer awareness and education. Mitchell served as vice president of leadership development for Urban League Young Professionals of St. Louis and is a former board member of United4Children. In 2016, he received the Salute to Business Excellence Award as voted by the St. Louis American Newspaper. Also in 2016, Marvin was an honored recipient of the St. Louis County NAACP Distinguished Legacy Award. Marvin can be heard weekly hosting his financial and economic radio talk show, “Re-thinking Retirement” on NewsTalk 97.1 FM, and seen on Fox 2 News as their exclusive retirement adviser.

Advocating for Justice That Restores – Criminal Justice Reform Amidst a Pandemic and Civil Unrest  Sammy Perez serves Prison Fellowship’s advocacy team by building and mobilizing a network of people who are passionate about justice that restores. Perez equips Prison Fellowship’s Justice Advocates in the eastern U.S. to improve the criminal justice system through strategies including constituent lobbying, media engagement, and storytelling. After rediscovering faith in Christ, Perez, who has spent time in prison, overcame his past and began to serve others impacted by crime and incarceration. His letters to the editor have been published in regional Virginia outlets, including the Richmond Times-Dispatch and NoVa News. Perez was appointed by Governor Terry McAuliffe to the Governor’s Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice and Prevention in the Commonwealth.

Perez graduated from Liberty University with a degree in psychology, specializing in addiction and recovery, and is currently completing graduate studies in professional counseling. He enjoys life with his lovely wife and children.

Police Reform, the History of Law Enforcement and Your Rights -Sgt. Heather Taylor, President of the Ethical Society of Police and Lieutenant Ray Rice, Commander, Special Response Unit and Division of Special Operations, and Officer Shanette Hall, both of the St. Louis County Police Department will talk about take questions on the origins of law enforcement began with slave patrols. There is a long history of violence toward Black Americans, which has generated sentiments that our country should abolish the police because of our many atrocities. Whether you agree or not, neither side of the argument for and against abolishing the police seem to be willing to give a little for reform to happen, which is the most logical outcome. The session relies on additional life experience from service on numerous non-profit, civic, educational, and religious boards and is the author  Incarcerations in Black and White, the Subjugation of Black America and 21 Days to Joy, a Daily Devotional to Finding Joy.
