ANDREW J. YOUNG AWARDS

The Ethics Project’s Ambassador Andrew J. Young Award for Outstanding Ethics, Service, and Commitment to Family and Community, was established by The Ethics Project in 2011 to recognize individuals in the community who have dedicated their lives to serving the community while honoring the family.

Named for Andrew Young, former US Ambassador, congressman, minister,  Atlanta mayor, co-chair of the 1996 Olympics and top aide to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ambassador Young presented the first 13 awards to a cohort of community leaders at The Touhill Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Missouri St. Louis. Among those awardees was Judge Jimmie Edwards who went on to be named the National Judge of the Year in 2013, which was conferred by Chief Justice John Roberts at the US Supreme Court.

Ambassador Young has since presented the award at the inaugural National Youth Summit in St. Louis 2015. and in 2016 he presented the award during the National Youth Summit at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC to, among others, Dr. Terrence Roberts, for his continued work through the Little Rock Nine Foundation, Dr. Bernard Lafeyette, for his life’s work as the SNCC director who did the groundwork in Selma, Alabama, and continued service as the Chairman of the Board of the SCLC and professor at Emory University, to Ferguson activist Clifton Kinney who went on to meet with President Barack Obama, and Dr. Wintley Phipps, internationally recognized vocalist and founder of The American Dream Academy.  In 2017, The Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian was the first recipient of The Ambassador Young Life Time Achievement Award.

To nominate a high school student leader or adult who exhibits outstanding ethics, service, and commitment to family and community, please send an email to [email protected] along with the nominee’s name, address, email address, phone numbers and a statement of why that individual should be selected as a recipient of the award. Recipients must be present personally to receive the award at The National Youth Summit opening reception in Montgomery Alabama on Sunday, October 25th, 2020. THE 2017 PASSING THE TORCH AWARD CEREMONY

THE 2017 NYS TORCH AWARD was presented to eight outstanding student leaders of the EVAC Movement on November 12th, 2017 as a special historic recognition of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Torches were first presented at the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA where Dr. King was pastor at the time of his death. The Torches were first presented by Dr. Bernard Lafayette (SCLC Board Chair), the Rev. Dr. C. T. Vivian (SCLC past-president), Dr. Terrence Roberts (Little Rock Nine), and Lynne M. Jackson (Great-great-granddaughter of Dred and Harriet Scott.) They were presented again at Dr. King’s college alma mater, Morehouse College by the Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian who twice succeeded Dr. King as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
